Palliative Day Therapy

Sub Pages

Day Therapy is provided on a Wednesday and Thursday at the Hospice and on a Friday at Loughborough Hospital.

Day therapy is provided by a multi disciplinary team which includes Nurses, Health care assistants, Palliative care doctors, Physiotherapists, Occupational therapists, Complementary therapists, Creative and Diversional facilitator and Chaplains who are supported by Volunteers.

Referrals can be made for people 18 years or over with a diagnosis of active cancer, MND or non-malignant terminal illness living in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

Patients can be referred by any health or social care professional and at any stage following diagnosis for unresolved, difficult to control symptoms related to incurable illness, or unresolved psychological and social issues.

Specific needs might include:

  • Pain/symptom control
  • Emotional/psychological support
  • Carer Support/Respite care
  • Palliative rehabilitation within the limits of a person’s illness
  • Advance care planning and discussions about future care
  • Advice and information.

It is important that the referrer identifies the reason for referral and the current problems requiring Day Therapy service input. The patient should consent to the referral.

The focus of the Day Therapy service is for patients with specialist palliative care and palliative rehabilitation needs. The environment is not suitable for patients with dementia who wander or are agitated.

Patients referred for day therapy will be assessed and a programme of support and interventions agreed with them according to their needs and goals. This may be a programme for a day a week over 6 weeks or it may be individual appointments.

If there is a waiting list, attendance will be allocated on a needs priority basis. Where patients are placed on a waiting list, there will be regular contact with the patient and the referrer may be asked to provide updates.

Process for Referral

Referrals can be made to telephone number 0116 2318 490, by fax 0116 2318 495 or by post to LOROS Hospice, Groby Road, Leicester, LE3 9QE.

Referrals can be made at any time but referrals will only be picked up between 09:00 and 17:00 (Monday to Friday excluding Public Holidays) by the Co-ordinator who will contact the patient to arrange an assessment appointment. The Co-ordinator will arrange appropriate appointment(s) or signpost to other more appropriate services in conjunction with the clinical team.

Day therapy is provided on a Wednesday and Thursday at the main Hospice site off Groby Road, Leicester and on a Friday at Loughborough Hospital. Loughborough day therapy will aim to cover patients predominately from within a 10 mile radius of Loughborough but will be flexible.

Volunteers from several diverse communities in Leicestershire work with the Day Therapy service. Patients referred to the service may be supported by a volunteer who speaks one of a wide range of locally spoken languages if they would find this helpful.

Smoking LOROS operates a NO SMOKING policy.
